"Golden horseshoe of Lviv region" is one of the most popular tourist routes in Ukraine. The tour passes through the famous castles of Lviv region. Such name was obtained as a result of the location of objects by an arc, outwardly resembling a horseshoe. The tour route includes such castles: Oleskiy, Podgorodetsky, Zolochevsky, and sometimes also Svirzhsky. The length of the route is more than 200 km. The route was created for the development of the castle tourism of the Lviv region.
11:00 - 12:00 - Oleskiy Castle
Olesko Castle is located within the borders of the present-day Busk Raion in Ukraine. The first historical records of the castle are in a document dated 1327, when Pope Boniface IX gave Halych, a Catholic bishop, this castle as a gift. It is located about seventy-five kilometers from Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine.
In the 15th century, the castle was changed from being a defense point, to simply a getaway for aristocracy.
In 1605, the castle was bought by the nobleman Jan Daniłowicz. Sas, a wealthy local landowner and Voivode of the Ruthenian Voivodeship. It was then sold to the family of Koniecpolski. The new owners, whose main residence was in Zhovkva, treated the castle poorly, and only in 1682 the castle was renovated by Jan III Sobieski, who bought the complex from Stanislaw Koniecpolski for 400 000 zlotys. In early 18th century, Olesko was bought by the family of Rzewuski, and its collection of antiques was moved to another castle the Rzewuscy owned, Pidhirtsi Castle.
The castle is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of the Polish king Jan III Sobieski, the hero of the Battle of Vienna. He often lived there, and collected many of the artworks displayed in the present-day museum. Another Polish king, King Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki, was also born here. It is also said that Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, the most prominent leaders of Ukrainian Cossacks spent his childhood years here.
13:00 - 14:00 - Podgoretsky
Podgoretsky Castle is a well-preserved Renaissance palace surrounded by fortifications. The castle is located in the east of Lviv oblast in Podgortsy village. Together with Olesky and Zolochevsky castles it forms the “Golden Horseshoe of Ukraine” (tourist route of Lviv region castles).
The castle is a square from the east, south and west surrounded by lines of fortifications. At the site of today’s castle there were more ancient fortifications mentioned in 1530. Present Podgoretsky castle was built during 1635-1640.The park of the castle is a part of unique view of the architectural ensemble. Podgoretsky park belongs to the monuments of landscape gardening art of national importance. Created on the level of the best examples of so-called “Italian” Parks, it is the best and almost the only park of this type in Ukraine.
14:30 - 15:30 - Zolochiv Castle
The Zolochiv Castle is a masterpiece of defensive architecture. The town of Zolochiv is situated 60 km east from Lviv. The Zolochiv Castle was built in the first third of the 17th century as a defensive fortress. Over the centuries the castle served as a fortress, royal residence, prison and educational institution. The history of the Zolochiv Castle is very interesting and rich in historical and romantic adventures. Nowadays the Zolochiv Castle is a museum and the department of the Lviv Art Gallery. The new castle at the place of old wooden castle was built in Zolochiv in 17th century. It was designed by Italian architect. Its original purpose was a defensive fortress. In the castle’s courtyard there are two palaces. The biggest of them is called the Grand Palace. The Chinese Palace is situated opposite the tower. The Chinese Palace of the Zolochiv Castle is a unique monument of architecture. There are only three Chinese Palaces in Europe and one of them tourists may admire in Zolochiv. The Chinese palace was renewed in 2004 and opened for tourists.
16:30 - 17:30 - Svirzhsky Castle
Svirzhsky Castle is considered the most romantic castles of Lvov region: the lake washes it on one side and a beautiful park on the other ... It was built in the XV century and is a shining example of defensive architecture of the Galician school facilities in our time. The building is rectangular in shape (52h25 m) with two towers at the ends and at one time it was intended solely for defensive purposes.
Till our time Assumption Church is preserved, which stands in the castle park. From the church the road leads to a wooden bridge that once stood high above the moat and was lifting. Above the gate arms there was coat of arms of the Tsetneriv who owned the castle from the XVII century. During this time the castle was expanded to the south and is decorated with interesting Renaissance facades and picturesque gables. Architectural elements of the castle are like the castle facade of the Royal Arsenal in Lvov. The highlight of Svirzhsky castle is the fact that final part of the movie "The Three Musketeers" starred there.
